Helvetica

My views on Helvetica are that I personally believe it a very good font if there is such a thing. To each their own I guess. For its purpose of being used for government and official signage I believe it’s perfect. It has very clean lines and it’s very clear in it’s presentation. I never knew there was this controversy over this. It’s almost comical but I guess I’d have a different opinion if I was a designer.

I didn’t have a favorite designer but I did enjoy all of their opinions especially Erik Speakerman and Mathew Carter. They were funny.

After I watched the video I can honestly say it opened up my mind and I start to be more aware of my surroundings especially when it came to signage. Now I do believe that the type of font makes a big difference to the message especially if you are trying to get a clear message across. You have to give it its prop’s for its survival as a font and not being able to be improved.

Assignment 8

Based on your information, below is how your score compares to those of others with similar demographic information.
  • Your score: 81
  • Gender: Male
  • Age range: 30-39
  • Best score for your gender and age range: 0
  • Highest score for your gender and age range: 1520
0 ( Perfect Color Acuity )
99 ( Low Color Acuity )

This was no surprise to me. I have always had a very hard time seeing color and telling the difference between different shades.

Assignment 7

This has a very broad color palette. It seems to have a sinister type of emotion because of the use of the reds and yellows. I believe that this image stands out the most among all because of the use of these colors. It almost seems like he was angry or was in some type of rage when he painted this

This image to me uses more of a chromatic and limited color palette. I get a sense of calm when I look at this and it seems more serene.

This also has a brad palette in my opinion. There seems to be a lot more emotions in this than the other. I cant really pin point which one but it almost seems he is upset.

This painting feels more serene and peaceful. I think it has more of a limited color palette also using blues and grays.

So what have I learned about myself thru this exercise? Well, according to the assessment test I’m well organized, I tend to shy away from social situations and I’m considerate and remain calm when crazy things happen. I pretty much knew all of that but it’s nice to get some assurances, especially when there positive ones. By writing some of my thoughts down and re-reading them, my priorities have changed and I’m getting to be an old man. My work ethics have pretty much stayed the same and I’m pretty sure they will always be the same. I can thank my grandpa for that one. He was a pretty cool guy. As far as my interest go, they also haven’t changed. I still have a goal for a career and I’m not stopping until I get it. I also just realized I’m not gonna get to the 250 words required. I hope my ramblings have made sense and you enjoyed this post.

As I spoke about in my earlier blog, I’m not an art student nor will I be entering into the business. I have to say that since I’ve been attending class, I have found a new appreciation and respect for it.

I tried to find someone to interview for the career I’m going into. Because of its legality and gray interpretation, I wasn’t able to find someone to talk to me about it. So that leaves me with door number 2. Behind this door lies a job so special and heroic A&E made a show about it. It’s called “Dog the Bounty Hunter”. Yup I’d like to be a Bondsman. By the way I was just joking about “Dog”, the guy is giving the industry a bad name. He’s like professional wrestling, a big dummy in funny costume.

Anyways, a bondsman writes bail for someone who has been arrested and is trying to “bail” out of jail. Bail is a monetary guarantee that you will return to court and fill your legal obligations to the case in which you were arrested for. Since most bails are in the thousands and most people don’t have that kind of money to pay, bail companies will step in and guarantee the bond. This is usually at a cost of about 10% of the total bail amount plus some processing fees.

I spoke with a good friend of mine who is considered to be one of the best in the business, Brandon Drake. Brandon has recently taken the big plunge and decided to open his own company “Brandon’s Bail Bond’s” in the lovely city of Everett. I made a cold call to him to ask him some questions about his feeling towards the business. After a few pleasantries the conversation went similar to this.

Val: So how do you like your job?

Brandon: I love it. (Not sure that was totally truthful because I’ve been there many days and seen him pulling out his hair.)

Val: What were your qualifications towards getting the job?

Brandon: You need to obtain a license thru the state which involves testing and background checks. You are not allowed to have any felonies.

Val: What training do you need to maintain your job?

Brandon: Every year you need to do 16 hours of continuing education.

Val: Is there job growth?

Brandon: Yes, There will always be a need for bondsman even in tough economies.

Val: What are the pros and cons?

Brandon: The pro’s are that you can come and go when you want and that you’re pretty much in charge of your own schedule. The con’s are that you have a phone stuck to your ear all day and you have to deal with whiny people

Val: What some industry changes you are seeing?

Brandon: The high bails are going away because of what happen with Maurice Clemmons. The judges are reluctant to set any bail for violent felonies.

That pretty much concluded our interview. I’ve know Brandon for a few years and seen what he goes thru. At first impressions he looks a bit scary but all in all he’s the type of guy that will give you the shirt off his back. You can visit his Facebook site at http://www.facebook.com/BrandonsBailBonds if you have any other questions or if you’re in the unfortunate position to need his services.

These are the 5 jobs that would interest me if I was to enter the Design industry. I picked them because each has a little to do with some of my passions.

Printmakers: When I first saw this job description I was quite surprise to find that it included etchings in wood. I love the feel of wood and do some carpentry on the side. Wood has a feel of warmth and isn’t cold like metal is. The average salary of a printmaker in 2008 was around $37,00.00. This is an industry that has an expected growth rate of about 11%.

Graphic Designer: This job interest me because I like to dabble with Photoshop. It’s always amazed me. According to the website “ http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos092.htm#nature” the average salary in 2008 was around $56,000.00.

Drafters: I’ve used a lot of construction plans in my life and was always impressed by the people who designed them. The average salary for a drafter is around $56,000.00 too in 2008 unless they were freelance which in that case is was substantially more.

Illustrators:  Illustrators usually create pictures for books, magazines, and other publications and for commercial products such as textiles, wrapping paper, stationery, greeting cards, and calendars. These are also some of the things that interest me. I don’t think I would like to do them full time but occasionally they would be fine. The average compensation for this type of position in 2008 was between $32,600.00 and $56,620.00.

Landscape Architect: This is similar to drafting except with plants. That was a pretty lame description but I hope you get the idea. With the exception of freelance architects, the average salary’s around $45,000.00.

The information I obtained came from the website “http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos092.htm#nature”. These are in no particular order to my preference but if I was to pursue a career in the design these are definitely the ones I’d choose.

After being a fast pace industry for most of my 20 working years, I believe that my ideal job would be a lot slower pace and in a completely different industry. Schedules, budgets and deadlines are not very appealing. I’d want a career which I can have a flexible schedule so that I may be able to spend more time with my family which I feel I was deprived of while working as a Construction Manager. I’d also have to my own boss. This would give me the freedom and flexibility to run my business as I please. My salary would have t be around $150,000.00. Seems like a lot but I do have a couple of daughters who have already at the ages of 8 and 11 expressed their interests in having a higher education. Maybe I better shoot for $250,000.00. I’d also like to have the freedom of using my own creativity but also be able to call on other leaders in the industry for help and inspiration. The work I have chosen is not a computer based industry but they are used for bookkeeping, information and automation. I’m not an art student and really have no valid skills in this industry so I’m trying to word my blogs accordingly. Please be patient with me I’m really trying to do my best. Once I’ve concord this class to get my degree I’m sure it will make me a more well rounded student, businessman and all in all good person. 250 exactly!!!!
